RJ's 2 Week Dr. Appointment

We took our little man to the doctor this morning and could not believe how much he has grown in just 2 weeks. He measured in at 8 lbs. 4 oz. 20.5 inches!! Wow, what a little piglet (actually I call him my "Piggly Wiggly" if anyone remembers those Southern grocery chains)! :) It was reassuring for me to know that he's been getting plenty to eat. With breastfeeding, it's really difficult to determine how much he's really getting. The doctor seemed pleased and gave me some breastfeeding and pumping pointers (I've used the pump only 1 time so far and have yet to try him with the bottle). It was a nice visit. She also gave us some reassurance that his "weird" breathing and sometimes "animal like" panting is completely normal for newborns!

Some of the not so good items were:
- He's slightly "tongue tied" (the clef of his tongue is closer to the front than most) and that can sometimes cause a problem with nutrition (although there doesn't currently seem to be an issue obviously) and maybe with speech later in life. She said we will watch it and see if there are any issues. If so, they will clip the tongue and repair it (ouch!).
- His cord did not fall off exactly right . . . there was an area under the skin that did not dry out and was still wet. So, she took some liquid nitrate and burned that area. We will treat it like another cord - applying alcohol with each diaper change and antibiotic ointment 3 times a day for about a week. This should then fall off and all will be perfect! We're going to visit the Dr. the Monday after Easter just for her to check and make sure.
- Finally, we had to take the little guy to the lab to have his heel pricked. They do this first when they are born and do a slew of screenings on the blood and now again at 2 weeks. He cried a little with the pricks (yes they had to prick 2 times to get enough blood - ick), but we comforted him and all was good again. He really was a champ about it all! I was a proud Mommy! :) He did an absolutely excellent job with all of it!

I'd like to take this opportunity to throw out a HUGE kudos to my wonderful husband, Rob. He has been an absolutely amazing Father! He went to every single prenatal appointment with me (even though he works a lot in CA he arranged his schedule to make this a priority) and now he continues to go to the pediatrician visits and play an integral role in his son's life! This is not something I take for granted. I am VERY thankful that he puts us as a priority and that his job has been flexible enough to allow him to do so. Additionally, I don't believe I mentioned how incredible Rob was throughout the labor and delivery. Granted, I didn't have enough energy to tell him what I thought about him when he asked if I could still keep laboring for a few more days so we could have our baby on leap year (when contractions were 1- 2 minutes apart and I was 8-9cms dilated). He meant well . . . was trying to throw a joke in to help get my mind off the pain. He is SUCH an incredibly positive person and I was SO blessed to have him in the room with me cheering me on throughout the entire labor. And then afterwards, he waited on me hand and foot . . . asked nurses to get me anything and everything I needed. He was as perfect of a coach as I thought he would be, but even better!! SO - thank you, thank you, thank you to the love of my life, my best friend and the best new father in the world - my husband Rob! Each day I thank God for bringing you into my life. I am truly blessed with you as my partner and forever thankful!

My mom let me know today that I have kept RJ's hemotobin(not sure exactly how this is spelled) a secret from the world. Well, not on purpose. This is something he was born with and is some blood on his head that will slowly disapate. It makes his head look a little mishaped - sorta like a cone on the back left of his head. I call it his horn! Anyway, it had gotten a little softer in the last few days and we've been a little concerned about it. The doctor reassured us that all is well with it and the softness is merely the blood disapating. Sometimes these spots are quite tender for little ones, but RJ has never shown that to be the case with his. Mainly, it's just sorta gross. Oh and speaking of weird things with his head - he has 3 birth marks on his head - the little red one they get between the eyes (I forget the technical name) that will go away in a few months, a red one on the back of his head under his hair and the red one on his neck that also has a technical name I've forgotten. The last 2 will be permanent. Heck - I have like 7 birthmarks, so I think the little guys got away pretty good considering he's related to his Mama! :)
